Edwards and Gary O'Neil are two of the initial candidates under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend following the squad's ten-game without a victory start to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous links to the club - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would pose a possible hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who made over a century of games for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they start the process of appointing a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is additionally appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a shock choice given he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
