Gas Detonation Claims Three Police Officers While Executing Eviction Operation in Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence near Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.
All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female got detained at the scene and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was found not long after. All three have been transported to hospital.
The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene showed the structure left as a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.
Financial Context
The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.
Negotiators had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the police came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed the media.
A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the interior minister stated.
Casualties and Damage
Those injured by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
He thought the detonation had occurred on a story above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
